Vacheron Constantin Overseas Watches

Influenced by the design of the older 222 model that was released in 1977, the Overseas is a sport-luxe classic often talked about in the same breath as the Nautilus and Royal Oak. Made in everything from stainless steel to precious metal, it has emerged in recent years as Vacheron Constantin’s most prominent collection.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Watches

History

Launched in 1996, Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas leant heavily on the design of the 222 model, designed by Jorg Hysek and released in 1977, 222 years after the brand was founded. As well as the 222, it bore a slight resemblance to another Vacheron Constantin watch from the early 1990s, the little-known Phidias model.

Designed to cater to the modern globetrotter, the Overseas seamlessly combines functionality with elegance. As one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers, Vacheron Constantin holds a significant place in horological history, and the Overseas collection embodies this legacy by offering timepieces that are both versatile and luxurious.

The earliest versions of the Overseas were simple time-and-date models that came in a relatively small 37mm or 35mm case. Designed by the brand’s Vincent Kaufmann and freelance designer, Dino Modolo, this fledgling collection was distinguished by its integrated bracelet, and a bezel that subtly incorporated the brand’s Maltese cross logo. In later generation models, the links of the bracelet also incorporated this design element.

A second generation of the Overseas collection was introduced in 2004 before the series underwent a more significant overhaul in 2016—among the most noticeable changes being the bezel, which now featured six notches instead of eight, and the exhibition casebacks, allowing the wearer to admire the movement within.

These days, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection comprises a wide variety of models, each with its unique character. As well as stainless steel, the Overseas is offered in lightweight titanium, pink gold and white gold. Dial colours come in black, white, green or blue, as well as skeletonised versions exposing the exquisitely finished movement.

In terms of complications, the collection has widened considerably. No longer just a time-and-date watch, the Overseas collection now include chronographs, dual-time watches, a moonphase with retrograde date and even a perpetual calendar.

The Overseas Tourbillon model elevates the collection further, combining intricate craftsmanship with one of the most technically accomplished and aesthetically pleasing features in high-end watchmaking. The Tourbillon model comes in white gold, pink gold, steel or titanium.

Though not made for diving, most Overseas models offer a water resistance of 50 metres to 150 metres, depending on the model, and contemporary versions are powered by in-house movements. Older generation models were fitted with modified calibres from Girard-Perregaux or Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Each Overseas timepiece reflects Vacheron Constantin's unwavering dedication to quality and innovation, making the Vacheron Overseas family a popular choice for discerning collectors of luxury watches.

Popular Vacheron Constantin Overseas Models

Overseas 4520V/210A-B128

This is the standard stainless-steel time-and-date version of the Overseas with a sunburst-effect blue dial and 18k-gold applied hour markers highlighted with SuperLuminova, as well as a framed date aperture at 3 o’clock. The exhibition case back displays the self-winding Caliber 5100, complete with the 22k gold rotor found in all contemporary Overseas models. Water resistant to 150 metres and coming with the customary Overseas steel bracelet incorporating the Maltese Cross logo, it is also available with a white or black dial.

Overseas Chronograph reference 5520V/210R-B966

The combination of pink gold with a green dial makes this reference one of the most distinctive Overseas models. This Overseas Chronograph was released in 2024 alongside three other Overseas models with the same metal and dial colour. As well as the chronograph to record lapsed time, it features a date window between 4 and 5 o’clock and boasts an exhibition caseback displaying the calibre 5200, complete with a detailed 21k gold winding rotor. With its 42.5mm case, this is as large as the Overseas gets and its water resistance is the highest offered in the collection at 150 metres.

Overseas Tourbillon 6000V/210T-H032

This 42.5mm Titanium Tourbillon Overseas model, released in 2024, comes with a stunning satin-finished lacquered blue dial with sunburst effect. The tourbillon, displayed through the dial at 6 o’clock, features a cage inspired by the brand’s Maltese cross logo. The bar of the tourbillon carriage is entirely hand-bevelled, an endeavour that takes almost 12 hours to complete. It runs on the 2160 automatic calibre, an ultra-slim movement featuring an unusual peripheral winding rotor that doesn’t obstruct the view of the movement through the caseback. The water resistance is 50 metres.

Overseas Chronograph reference 5520V/210A-B686

Launched in 2023, this 42.5mm stainless-steel Overseas Chronograph features a “panda”-style silver-toned dial with three contrasting black chronograph subdials. It’s a dial style not commonly found on the brand’s contemporary chronographs or in its extensive back catalogue, pleasing collectors when it was released. It’s powered by the self-winding Calibre 5200, also featuring a date function, which has powered all Overseas chronograph watches since the collection was relaunched in 2016. It is water resistant to 150 metres and comes with two alternative easily interchangeable strap options in rubber and leather.

Overseas Dual Time 7900V/000R-B336

This dual-time watch in 18k pink gold is slightly smaller than most contemporary Overseas models at 41mm, but it accommodates a host of features. The additional red-arrow-tipped hour hand is the 24-hour hand for the extra time zone and is accompanied by the fan-form AM-PM indicator at 9 o’clock to distinguish whether it’s morning or evening, while the date is displayed via the large subdial at 6 o’clock. This watch is powered by the self-winding calibre 5110 DT/2, visible through the exhibition caseback.

Overseas Dual Time 47450/000W-9511

This discontinued dual-time Overseas model, launched in 2010, is part of what collectors term the “Deep Stream” series of watches, characterized by their steel cases with blasted titanium bezel and anthracite-coloured dial. As a dual-timer, it boasts an additional time zone at 6 o’clock, with a small AM/PM indicator beside it, as well as a power reserve display between 8 and 11 o'clock, and a subdial for the date between 1 and 3 o’clock. The latter function is adjusted by the pusher at 2 o’clock. It’s powered by the automatic calibre 1222 SC—a modified Jaeger-LeCoultre movement—and comes on a rubber or leather integrated strap.

Perpetual Calendar Ultra-thin skeleton 4300V/220R-B547

One of the most desirable Overseas models among aficionados of the brand, this perpetual calendar skeleton model comes in 18k pink gold with a dial exposing the inner workings of this highly complicated perpetual calendar movement, accurate until the year 2100. A moon phase with a star-studded sky and two gold moons add to the refined looks of this exceptional timepiece, which is surprisingly slender at 8.1mm, considering its movement comprises 276 components. It’s powered by the Calibre 1120/3 QPSQ/1. It’s also available in white gold.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Celebrities

Considering Vacheron Constantin is among the Holy Trinity of watchmaking, alongside Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, it’s not surprising that it’s gained the attention of some of the biggest names in sport and entertainment.

One of those is superstar actor, Tom Cruise, who was spotted in 2023 at the Australian premiere of Mission: Impossible 7 wearing a stunning white-gold Overseas Ultra Thin.

NBA star, Steph Curry is renowned for more than just his talents in basketball, but his style, too. He’s been spotted wearing an Overseas Chronograph with a black dial and contrasting white subdials on a black rubber strap

From sport to music, where the Overseas has earned fans in Canadian singer, The Weeknd and British rapper, Dave. The latter was photographed wearing a stainless-steel model with a blue dial and a black rubber strap, whereas The Weeknd was seen with an 18k rose-gold edition boasting a stunning azure blue sunburst dial.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Movie Appearances

The Overseas has also made an impact on the silver screen, featuring on the wrist of Chris Hemsworth in action thriller Blackhat (2015). In this film, Hemsworth portrays a convicted computer hacker who’s offered clemency for helping track down a dangerous cybercriminal. Throughout the movie, he wears a handsome Overseas with a grey quarter-Arabic dial and a leather strap.
